Week 15 Summary – Thanks for the Travels!

We were asked by the professor to write a letter to future DS106 students. I thought this was a fantastic way to reflect upon the semester and understand what does and doesn’t work. I hope that future students enjoy the class and have a little fun.

For my final project, I chose to complete Rose’s story. During the assignments I used her for, I alluded to her goal of performing one final criminal act so she could finally relax her days away. Rose finally got it.

  1. Part 1: The Plan
  2. Part 2: The Fair
  3. Part 3: The Gang
  4. Part 4: Read All About It!
  5. Part 5: Goodbye

If you don’t want to read it in parts, you can find it all linked together in The Final Heist (I prefer to read it in parts).

Each assignment linked the previous and next part in Rose’s story. It also has a star amount at the bottom. In total 25☆’s were completed in writing, audio, web and visual assignments. I originally thought of ending Rose’s story tragically, with her gang crossing her and taking the money, but I decided there should be a happy ending for Rose. While deceit and trickery can make for great elements within stories, sometimes you just need to have a satisfying end to an adventure.

Take care Professor Bond!

The Final Heist

Part 1: The Plan

If you knew her past, you’d know that this has always been her goal. She enjoyed what she did, but she knew it couldn’t be sustained. Rose was ready. She had assembled her team and had done the research. That’s more than what you can say for any of the other robberies she had performed.

The target was the bank. The town fair was coming through and she knew the whole place would be filled with unsuspecting individuals. But she didn’t want their small change. She wanted where they put it all. The fair would provide a distraction for everyone, and if worst comes to worst, plenty of hostages for her gang.

The final day of the fair was this Thursday. That’s when she planned on making her move.

In the meantime, she polished her weaponry and planned her escape.

Part 2: The Fair

Part 3: The Gang

Three of the GangOne of The GangTwo of the Gang

On the far left is big Tom. He’s a twitchy fellow, and often keeps his hands on his guns. In the middle is handsome Pete. He’s a real slick outlaw and can trick almost anyone out of their possessions. Finally on the far right is Jess the Mess. Jessie is known to leave a wake of carnage behind him. And of course the woman who has brought them all together,Rose Oakley.Pixeled Outlaww

Part 4: Read All About It!

Want to learn what happened to our outlaw, Rose Oakley, and her plan? You can check it out from your local news source.

Part 5: Goodbye

She had finally done what she had planned to do. She clutched her sack of money close to her as she watched the horizon move quickly past her. She didn’t know where the others were planning to go, she didn’t care. She had her share, and was now going to live a more relaxed life.

She sure was going to miss it though. The excitement of the steal and the feeling that no one could stop her, not even the law.

She had some friends out West, she knew they’d help her. And even if they didn’t, she knew she could get by on her own. That’s what she had been doing her whole life, and look where it had led her.

The train sped by, chasing the sunset down, carrying a very happy passenger.

Dear Future Students,

  1. It’s OK to let your creative side shine a bit, no one is going to judge you!
  2. Get your work done in the beginning of the week, or at least slowly work on it throughout the week. There is no way you can produce good work in one day. Yea you’ll get it done, but it won’t be something you’re proud of.
  3. Take this class with a friend. Can’t? Then get to know someone in the class! It’s fun discussing project ideas along with having someone to goof off with. You can meet these people during your group projects.
  4. Enjoy what you’re working on. Try not to take it too seriously. It’s hard letting go an having a little bit of fun, but that’s what this class should be for: learning something new and taking the plunge!

Good luck!

The Final Heist – Part 4: Read All About It! – Web Assignment

Want to learn what happened to our outlaw, Rose Oakley, and her plan? You can check it out from your local news source.

I started with another news article before using the xray goggles to create my own story of Rose’s heist. It’s difficult writing like a news journalist. I’m not very good at it, and it starts to sound more like a writing project that an objective recreation of the event that occured. At least that’s not a profession I know I want to get into!

As I had previously done for the character Rose, I created a portrait of each heist member in paint. I scaled the image down to 16×16 pixels and drew from there. I tried giving big Tom a beard and Jess the mess a rifle, but it ended up looking like a shotgun. For some reason when I saved the images as jpeg images the colors became altered. It didn’t mess with the original pictures too much, just something to note.

The Final Heist – Part 2: The Fair – Audio Assignment

This is supposed to mimic the Fair that Rose is using as cover for her big heist. This sound clip was created using three sound files found on freesound.org. 1) A Carousel, 2) Horses Trotting, and 3) Children laughing and screaming. The carousel had to be toned down because it over powered the other sounds, along with the children laughing. I chose to fade in that track and keep the horses trotting at a normal level. I think I did that because horses give it a more western flavor, which is kind of what I’m going for. All of this was done using Audacity.

The final idea (draft)

I have to come up with a story, something that I can use as a final project. What better story to use other than my western character I have been working on this semester! I’m not that creative of an individual, so having a character with a background already created makes this assignment a little bit easier. I can do a story on:

  1. Her whole life. I can do a story of her as a young girl and then her growing up on the rails stealing from other individuals to make a living, or
  2. A story about her running from the law.

I am currently leaning towards the second option. Why? Because I already got some cool sound effect story ideas! I’m excited for this assignment because I’ll get to dabble in multiple assignment banks and not be confined to just one. Lets see how this story plays out!

Week 13 Summary

Week 13 brought about the web. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I guess the creativity came out of using web applications to produce stories and ideas. I guess, at least to me, it’s difficult to define this medium. I started out the week by completing a story using x-ray goggles.

The Web Assignments I did were:

  1. Create your Dream Room (4 stars)
  2. Privacy on the Web (3 and 1/2 stars)
  3. Google Translate Fail (3 and 1/2 stars)

Also connecting my daily creates into one story was kind of fun. I think it’s because I like making silly poems and this allowed me to do just that!
